The Council of Ministers has approved the proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), the so-called Energy Storage Strategy, which will support the deployment of renewable energies and will be key to guaranteeing safety, quality, sustainability and economy supply.

Energy storage systems are key to guaranteeing the transition to an emissions-neutral economy and the effective integration of renewable energies in the system, since they allow energy to be saved at times when there is surplus to use it when the renewable resource is scarce or the demand is high.

"It allows the perfect integration of renewable technologies in the system instead of having to have a backup capacity equivalent to the renewable energy that we have. Thus, we will be able to use the energy using production surpluses where there is a lot of sun or a lot of wind. in those moments when there is little sun, little wind, ”said Teresa Ribera, vice president and minister of MITECO.

These technologies provide the system with flexibility and stability and enable it to face the variability and partial predictability of renewable technologies, and avoid the loss of clean energy when there is the capacity to generate more renewable energy than can be consumed, being able to use then.

“This Strategy places us at the forefront of what is being done in Europe. Spain is an energetic island, which forces us to have to go ahead to fulfill our commitment to climate neutrality ”, Ribera said.

These technologies have application in new business niches such as electric mobility or in the building sector through electrical self-consumption and thermal energy storage, allowing the emergence of new solutions in buildings, which also serve as indirect structural measurement against energy poverty. Likewise, they can be used in industry, which has a strong potential for self-consumption with storage, energy integration and decarbonization of processes that use heat and cold; as well as in other sectors through self-consumption applications, among others.

Storage technologies favor the development of new business models such as independent aggregators or renewable energy communities, which promote the active role of consumers by allowing their direct participation in the management of their energy.
